Tappan Zee Constructors failed to maintain a safe work site, according to a violation issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the lohud.com story said.
Several people were injured, but no one was killed, in July 19 incident, according to multiple media reports.
The crane fell across all the lanes, causing traffic for hours.
OSHA found that equipment being used to position a pile failed and that crews had overestimated the crane’s capacity, lohud.com reported.
A spokesman for the construction coalition, which can contest the citation or the fine, said last week that the $3.9 billion project was one of the safest in the country, the lohud.com report said.
