BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Class C football rivalry between perennial powers Bronxville and Dobbs Ferry continues Saturday at Bronxville High School when the Broncos host defending Class C state champion Eagles for Homecoming in what may be a playoff preview at 6 p.m.
Bronxville has been revived after losing two of its first three games of the season and stands at 4-2 and ranked second in the Class C playoff points standings, while Dobbs Ferry (4-2) currently is fifth and in danger of missing the postseason after a 39-6 loss to Woodlands.
The postseason playoff seedings are determined by the Piner Points ranking system, which uses wins and losses and strength of schedule to determine points. Woodlands leads in points with 3.37, Bronxville has 2.37, Rye Neck 1.9 and Albertus Magnus 1.83. Dobbs Ferry, with 1.17 points, needs a win versus Bronxville to have a chance at the fourth and final playoff spot.
Dobbs Ferry's lone loss last year was an opening-day 15-14 nail biter to Bronxville, but the Eagles avenged it with a victory against the Broncos in the Section 1 Class C championship game. The two teams have traded the top spot the last several years.
Bronxville was revived with the return of tri-captain Luke Marrone last week. The senior receiver and defensive back, who missed five games with a broken arm. scored the game's only touchdown in a 7-0 victory versus previously unbeaten Tuckahoe (a Class D team). Marrone adds experience on both sides of the ball.
The Eagles depend on lead running back Tim Soave, who has gained more than 1,000 yards, and Brian Gardner, a running back and defensive lineman. Soave must have a big game to beat the Broncos.
This will be a tough defensive game with Dobbs Ferry needing a win and Bronxville looking to protect its playoff spot.
