WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- They are not the romantic, colorful, wooden, covered bridges that crossed New York's rivers in the last century, but the bridges of Westchester County are an integral part of the transportation lifeline for hundreds of thousands of residents and many are in need of repair and renovation.

Aside from the most obvious -- the New NY Bridge being built to replace the Tappan Zee Bridge from Tarrytown to Nyack in Rockland at a cost of more than estimated $4 billion -- bridges in Scarsdale, Hastings-on-Hudson, Ardsley-Dobbs Ferry, Greenburgh and elsewhere along county and state highways and major arterials in Westchester are under repair and renovation.

Elmsford Mayor Robert Williams said the bridge project on a section of the Sprain Brook Parkway bridge over his village's main thoroughfare Route 119 that  began in 2012 has been completed.

"The main re-construction is done, now is just the little items to finish up -- trees, blacktop, fence etc.," Williams said. "The work took about two years and  the contractor ECCO is doing a great job." Town of Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner says the state should increase funding for needed road, bridge and infrastructure work.

There are many positive aspects to the tax cap that the Legislature imposed on local governments a few years ago and there are also some negatives," Feiner said.

"The problem that I see -- we have many infrastructure needs," Feiner said. "But everyone is cutting back. Work that needs to be done is being deferred. I think (New York State) should have a road/bridge bond act referendum -- let the voters decide if they would support additional funding for road/bridge costs."

The Bronx River Parkway between Scarsdale and White Plains has become tough to navigate as the Crane Road Bridge and overpass undergoes major reconstruction. Motorists are advised to avoid the parkway especially during rush hours. Due to the work, the northbound Bronx River Parkway will be closed weekdays through Friday, Aug. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from the Sprain Brook Parkway in Yonkers to the Westchester County Center (Exit 22) in White Plains.

In Hastings, the long-awaited Warburton Avenue Bridge, which is used by travelers up and down the Rivertowns, will be under repair for at least the next 14 months.

The long overpass at Route 100 in Greenburgh, another well-traveled road through Mount Pleasant and Greenburgh, has been under construction for months.

Local travelers along Route 9A in Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, North Yonkers, Hastings and Elmsford know the travel hazards of the area around the

Ashford Avenue Bridge that connects Dobbs Ferry with Ardsley over the New York State Thruway and the Saw Mill River Parkway. After concrete began falling in 2012, Westchester County began repair and reconstruction that is expected to continue through 2014 and 2015.

Separate bridges running north and south along the Taconic Parkway across the Croton Reservoir was under renovation for nearly a year and completed late in 2013.

Along the Mount Vernon-Yonkers border in Fleetwood, an overpass and on ramp the Cross County Parkway is currently closed for reconstruction until August 29.
