HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. The Hastings Community Center was filled with families and their children on Friday night as they danced and clapped along to live music as Friday Night Live returned to the village.
My favorite part is just bringing the community together and people of all ages, said Hastings Trustee Meg Walker. All these people coming together, whether its inside or outside and enjoying the night.
Uasuf Gueye performed for the crowd and got local residents involved with rhythmic clapping to the beats of his drum. Gueye played for about 15 minutes and several young children hurried to the front of the room to dance to the music.
Its good, sometimes it takes a minute to grab their attention, but when I got them, I got them, Gueye said.
Friday Night Live consisted of three acts this time around with the first segment in the community center with a more kid friendly event. Cheick Hamala Diabate later played at the Purple Crayon and then Shona Mbira Music of Zimbabwe with Nora Balaban, Banning Eyre and Peter Lewis capped off the night at the Rainwater Grill.
I like when we have kids things and adult things, this is geared more towards the kids, Hastings Recreation Assistant Lisa OReilly said of the opening act.
This was the first Friday Night Live since the Christmas season, but there will be many more to come and as the weather gets increasingly warmer the outdoor events return. While OReilly said she loved to have the festival back, shes looking forward to the more typical Friday Night Live.
I cant wait until we close the streets again, OReilly said.
