Dobbs Ferry Pop Warner Coach: Football Builds Self-Esteem

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – As the leaves start to change colors there’s something you’ll see each and every year and that’s the Pop Warner football teams practicing down at Gould Park.

Some say what the players learn from football is more important in terms of life skills rather than the game itself.

“It’s huge, we’re trying to build their confidence and build self-esteem,” said Paddy Steinschneider, who has been coaching Dobbs Ferry football for 18 years.  “It’s a backyard free play where they have to figure it all out.”

Whether kids have been playing since they could first walk or just started, some parents say football can be infectious.

“It’s funny, he went to a summer camp and his buddies were talking about it,” said William Flynn as he watched practice from the sidelines. “This is his first year and he loves it.”

Steinschneider said he began coaching when his son started playing and moved up with him, but never planned to stay on for as long as he has.

“When I first started, parents pulled up, the kid got out and all they asked was when to pick them up,” he said.

Now, Steinschneider said, parents actively watch practices and shout encouragement from the sidelines.

“The life lesson is really what’s instilled in them very well,” Flynn said.
