HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. Lorenzo "Larry" Calvi, a longtime pizza shop owner in Hastings, died Oct. 16 at the VA Hospital in Montrose, after an extended illness. He was 65.
A former resident of Yonkers, Hastings and Lewisboro, Calvi was the proprietor of King Pizza in Hastings-on-Hudson. Calvi would enjoy "drafting" the high school kids who hung out at his pizzeria for hours at a time, some of whom would assemble cardboard pizza boxes in exchange for Italian ices or slices of pizza.
Most recently of Millbrook, N.Y., Calvi was born on Jun. 21, 1946 in Calabria, Italy to George and Carmela Calvi. In 1951, he immigrated to New York with his father and siblings aboard the Saturnia ocean liner to reunite with his mother. He attended Yonkers schools and graduated from Saunders Trade and Technical School in 1964.
Calvi served in the US Marine Corps in Da Nang, Vietnam in the mid-1960s and later became a member of the Hastings Veterans of Foreign Wars. A parishioner of Blessed Kateri Tekawitha Roman Catholic Church in LaGrangeville, he married Mary Jean Figura in 1982 at Christ the King Church in Yonkers.
Possessing a lust for life, Calvi enjoyed going on cross-country motorcycle trips with friends, ending up as far as Nova Scotia and the Black Hills in South Dakota. In the autumn, he enjoyed deer hunting. He also loved playing sports and amateur speedway racing, for which he won trophies.
Friends and family may visit on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at McHoul Funeral Home in Hopewell Junction, N.Y. The funeral mass is Thursday at 10 a.m. at Blessed Kateri Tekawitha Church. Interment to follow at Clove Cemetery.
