The film, which stars Moore as a professor who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers, used the main auditorium, the dentist's office and the front exterior of Andrus, which is located on sprawling grounds on Broadway near the border of Yonkers and Hastings-on-Hudson.
"We were looking for two settings -- a nursing home and a conference hall room -- and we found that Andrus had both," Locations Director Michele Baker said. "The staff and (administrators) have been so helpful in making the shoot so available. We have the freedom to move through the building and the residents have been so wonderful. They have really been curious, supportive and help set the tone."
Although Moore was not available to the press, several Andrus residents were cast as background actors, including Eugenia Philipowski and Sheila Moore.
"I had a career in the fashion business in Manhattan for many years and I'm interested in how they make movies," Philipowski said. "I'm very nosey -- like to know everything that's going on. So, now I'm getting a chance to be in a movie. I never expected this. It's very nice to meet all these creative people."
Moore, who joked that she was Julianne Moore's cousin, said she was watching the filming Monday night and when the residents were asked if they might want to be in the audience of a convention scene, she volunteered.
"I raised my hand and they picked me," Moore said. "I was kidding around and didn't know we were really going to be in the scene. I worked in the grocery business at Grand Union and a film crew made a commercial in our store. It took all day and it was a 30 second commercial. Seeing this film being made is fascinating."
"Still Alice" is scheduled to be released in 2015.
