The event took place at 9:30 p.m. on Route 45 when Ramapo police officers were conducting a traffic stop near Rovitz Place, police said.
While on the stop, the driver of a 2002 Mercedes Benz failed to leave enough room as he passed the officers and ended up hitting the side view mirror of the patrol car, police said.
After hitting the cruiser, the driver of the vehicle then attempted to flee the scene before running off the road near the intersection of Route 45 and Green Ridge Way, police said.
The three men riding in the vehicle then fled on foot. Officers were able to capture one occupant, a 22-year-old male from Pomona, who was charged with possession of marijuana, police said.
A further investigation led officers to the registered owner of the vehicle which in turn led them to the 17-year-old male Spring Valley resident. It was determined that the teen was the driver the vehicle that struck the officer's car, police said.
He was charged with operating a vehicle with a suspended/revoked registration and with leaving the scene of an accident and other violations.
Both were released and are scheduled to appear in court a future date.
