Rasso Chambers, 19, was charged Wednesday with one count of tampering with physical evidence, a felony, state police said.
Speights, 20, was killed trying to break up a fight at a New Year's Eve party in Pine Bush.
Through the investigation into the murder, police found that Chambers deleted electronic evidence from his cell phone shortly after Speights was killed, state police said.
Chambers is being held at the Orange County Jail in lieu of $25,00 cash bail or $50,000 secured bond.
