SUFFERN, N.Y. — A teenager was killed Wednesday night on Route 202 in Suffern when a Lexus driven by an off-duty police officer from Peekskill hit a group of students standing in the driveway of their yeshiva dormitory just before midnight Thursday, according to multiple reports.
The off-duty officer, identified as Jonathan Mosquera, 24, was attempting to pass a Honda driven by Tzvi Hakakian, 19, as Hakakian was turning into the driveway, according to CBS 2.
Mosquera's car hit an embankment and hit two trees, but he managed to escape serious injury.
Authorities are investigating whether speed was a factor.
Marcos Tawil, a 17-year-old from Argentina, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another student, David Maldanado, 19, was rushed to the hospital and is in critical condition, according to CBS 2.
That stretch of Route 202 between Route 81 (Wilder Road) and Route 84 (Lime Kiln Road/Spook Rock Road) until about 9 a.m. Thursday as the investigation continued.
