Jeep Plunges Into Ramapo River; Pomona Driver Faces Charges

RAMAPO, N.Y. – A Jeep driver found himself in deep, er, water after he went for a joy ride in the Ramapo River and got royally stuck, say local police.

A Pomona man got hit with traffic tickets and was cited by the state Department of Environmental Conservation after his vehicle went into the Ramapo River in Hilburn on Monday and got stuck.

The unidentified 23-year-old Pomona man, who took a detour Monday into the waterway in Hillburn, had to be fished out by village firefighters.

After his soggy ride was towed to shore, he got slapped with a few traffic tickets by police and was also charged by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, Ramapo police said in a Facebook post.

This isn’t the first time an off-roader has taken an unexpected dip in the river; local authorities say it happens a lot.

Back in January, a New Jersey man suffered hypothermia after his Jeep Wrangler sunk into the Ramapo’s chilly waters in Suffern, according to a report by northjersey.com.

One of his three passengers called 911 and the driver went for help, the northjersey.com article said.

He was found -- blue with cold and nearly frozen stiff -- about a mile away from the scene by a Mahwah police officer.

Both he and one of the passengers had to be taken to a local hospital and treated for exposure, the northjersey.com report said.
