Two Sloatsburg World War Two Veterans Died In June

SLOATSBURG, N.Y. -- Alexander "Allie" Massaro, a longtime resident of Sloatsburg and World War II Navy veteran died in June, according to www.sloatsburgvillage.com.

Massaro was Chief of the Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department from 1956 to 1958, and a member of he department for 68 years, said the report.

A Sloatsburg native, he was born in 1926 and "the most senior" fire department member - he joined in 1948 upon returning from is Navy service, said www.sloatsburg.com.

His death came the same month as George Heller, a decorated World War II veteran, who also died in June, the report said.

Both veterans took part in the Hudson Valley Honor Flight program whose focus is "celebrating" veterans of World War II, according to www.sloatsburgvillage.com.
