O&R To Clean Up Suffern Property Contaminated By Carcinogen

SUFFERN, N.Y. -- About 20,000 cubic yards of soil contaminated with a known carcinogen will be removed from the 1-acre property at 3 Pat Malone Drive, according to lohud.com.

The land, currently owned by Orange and Rockland Utilities, was contaminated by O&R's predecessor, which produced fuel gas on the site from 1902-35, the paper reported.

A probe that began in the 1990s eventually determined the grounds were contaminated by coal tar, a byproduct of manufactured gas, according to the report.

Though the property has changed hands numerous times throughout the years, the cleanup responsibilities rest with O&R, utility spokesman Mike Donovan told the newspaper.
