New Rockland Highway Dept. Substation Cuts Travel Times For Snow Plows

ORANGETOWN, N.Y. -- The county's Highway Department new substation that covers the southernmost part of Rockland will cut times and costs for snow plows due to its location, according to Lohud.com.

Rockland County Highway Chief Charles "Skip" Vezzetti said the department had been looking at the area for years as a way to reduce response times during winter storms, but the cost was prohibitive.

But a three-way land swap between the county, the town of Orangetown and the developer of Pointe at Lake Tappan, had the developer pay for the $500,000 cost of the project, said Lohud.com.

Because workers would have to come from New City or Stony Point, the response time has been cut by about 45 minutes with the new station.

According to officials, during the blizzard of 2016, two trucks from Orangetown were the first ones on the streets by 5:25 a.m., compared to the ones from Clarkstown which didn't arrive until 6:20 a.m., added Lohud.com.
