And now, it has. Over the course of the school year, the New York City-based company, which launched in 2013, has released its web-application and launched its iOS mobile app on the iTunes App Store. "We now have clients across the country using our platform," said Wright.
He calls Book & Table "an Uber for tutors." What makes his company different, he said, is the focus on the tutor. "I myself have been a tutor, and continue to tutor, and cannot stand the fact that tutors have to give up 50 percent-plus of their wages to middleman agencies, or have to work completely on their own as a freelancer," he said. "Book & Table does not charge tutors monthly, membership, or commission fees, and we've even built a cool team feature inside our app that enables tutors to connect with one another and refer each other clients.
"For example, your local Physics tutor who receives requests for English help can connect those clients with their local B&T teammate," he added. "Tutors can even use the app with students and parents they're already working with and these clients do not pay our normal 12 percent service fee on bookings."
On the agenda for those interested: Tutor Team-Building events. These events allow local Book & Table tutors to meet offline to learn more about each other's education and professional background, as well as their current availability and teaching pedagogy. "This way, when they have clients that ask them for advice on finding another local tutor of another subject or skill, their current tutor can directly refer them to one of their teammates," explained Wright.
He said his company is the only tutoring business with a team/referral feature that enables tutors to connect and more effectively run their business. "Everyone else wants to control the tutors and flow of business so they can control pricing and commission fees. We're for tutors, by tutors," he said.
