Quirky Rockland Poets Raise Funds To Attend 'Slam' Competition

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- An emergency medical tech, a marketing pro, a 7-Eleven manager and a science teacher might seem like a strange group of people to be hanging together, but add poetry to the mix and you have a slamming group of pros.

In fact, the "Rock Slam" (Rockland County Poetry Slam), as they are known across the country, are so good they will be taking part in the National Poetry Slam Aug. 7 to Aug. 12, in Denver, Colorado.

For those not in the know, the slam is a week-long poetry festival/competition in which 80 teams from all over North America compete, attend workshops, share art, and network.

"Our goal is to give local poets a chance to share their words and represent their local poetry community at one of the most exciting poetry events in the country," Rock Slam founder and poet Bryan Roessel said.

Unfortunately for the group of four, traveling is not cheap, so help is needed in covering transportation and lodging. So they have started an Indiegogo fundraiser to hopefully raise the last few hundred dollars needed.

Donors will receive perks and have the knowledge that they are helping a wonderful group of poets travel to Colorado in order to make strangers feel things with their words, the group said.

Rock Slam’s 2017 team includes Roessel, Nick Nappo, Victoria Fray, and Nick Yuknalis. They earned spots on the team by competing in the group's monthly slams at Casa del Sol in Nyack, and by impressing the audience at the group's end-of-the-season slam in May.

They come from all walks of life, and their poetry is sad, happy, intense, and even bizarre. But they all have one thing in common, they love poetry and would like a little help getting to the national competition.

"People should come see us," said Roessel. "We are performing this Saturday."
