Suffern Resident Credits Creative Thinking, Staff Input To Business Success

SUFFERN, N.Y. -- It's not every work environment that goes that extra mile to make staff happy. But at The Byne Group, a marketing/branding agency in Suffern, President Ann Byne is all about flexibility and out of the box thinking.

That includes once a week yoga classes and bright orange walls filled with inspirational quotes, everything from Eleanor Roosevelt to Oprah.

One of Byne's favorites: “You will never do anything without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor.” Or as she likes to say, "Take a leap of faith, just remember to have a big cape!"

Byne, a Suffern resident, took that leap over 16 years ago when she started her own agency. At the time, she did it because she wanted a flexible schedule where she was in control of her future. "My goal was to create an environment where 'creatives' could flourish, " she said. "Where the whole person was valued, and family came first."

And though she didn't seek to make it so, at the moment her team is all women, many of whom bring their unique passions and skill sets to the firm.

Which explains why now, once a week, furniture is moved, lights go off, mood music goes on and one of the staff, who is also a master yoga teacher, leads the office in one big yoga class. "It’s that out of the box thinking that keeps our firm growing and all of us, especially me, motivated, " said Byne.

She said staff input is the key driver behind her business success and the reason for her agency's many awards; The Byne Group recently won seven industry accolades this past year including two for its work with the Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council. Other clients include Nyack Hospital, Dominican College and Sterling National Bank.

"We have created a place where everyone’s opinion is valued, curiosity is valued and learning never stops," said Byne. "We think of ourselves as an extension of our clients’ marketing department and we encourage and embrace a team spirit atmosphere."

And speaking of spirit, Byne said her suite of offices at the Ryan Mansion even has a resident friendly ghost who she likes to think is Ida Barry Ryan, the original mistress of house and another strong woman.
