A blood bank in New York announced a blood emergency as concerns about the spread of the COVID-19 delta variant have led to fewer drives and drop-in donations. The New York Blood Center said on Monday, Aug. 23 that in recent weeks, the Type O blood supply has dropped from a supply of five days to between two and three days and between one to two days. Blood Drives To Be Held In NY In Effort To Save 4-Year-Old Boy With Leukemia
A number of blood drives are being held in the area this month in the hope of saving a Long Island 4-year-old with leukemia. Nassau County resident Ayden Paredes, of Glen Cove, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on Feb. 7 of 2021, according to Mark Paredes, Ayden's father. Ayden has been receiving chemotherapy treatments and blood transfusions since then, but doctors are now saying he needs a blood stem cell/bone marrow transplant to save his life, Mark said. Blood Drive Set For Daughter Injured When Plane Crashed Into Area House
An area family is asking the community to donate blood to help their daughter recover from a tragic accident. On Saturday, Aug. 17, a plane crashed into the Bocker family’s Dutchess County home in Union Vale, burning most of Hannah’s body and killing her father, Gerard Bocker. For the last two months, Hannah has been receiving treatment at Westchester Medical Center, which has included multiple surgeries. The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department will pay tribute to one of its fallen officers by holding a special blood drive next week. The event, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the Italian Community Center, 227 Mill St., Poughkeepsie, will honor Detective John Falcone, an 18-year veteran of the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department who dedicated his life to protecting the people he served. Students at LaGrange Middle School are hosting a blood drive in honor on Thursday, May 3 of their classmate, Emma, a seventh-grader at the school fighting cancer. The drive will run from 2:15 to 8:15 p.m. in the school gym. This event will help ensure hospitals and patients have access to the life-saving blood they need.
