The district's notice, posted on its website, says the resignation is "to pursue personal interests."

Details of what that entails are not immediately known.

Mahoney's abrupt resignation caps a brief tenure on the board. He was elected in May after running as a write-in candidate, according to Interim Superintendent Brian Monahan, who himself assumed his temporary position in July.

The board's special meeting on Monday was for its search for a new superintendent, according to Monahan, noting that he was not present.

A resignation letter was submitted to the district on Tuesday, Monahan said.

Mahoney's biography on the district's website notes that he "has been a lifelong resident of Mahopac," and mentions that he attended local schools, which included his 1992 graduation from Mahopac High School.

Mahoney's biography also details his career as an academic administrator, including his current position as headmaster at the EF Academy in Thornwood.

Monahan also discussed options that the school board has for filling the vacant seat, although he noted there has been no discussion yet. The board could either set a special election or it could appoint someone to the seat. If an appointment is made, then the seat will be up for a vote on the regular school board election day in May, 2015.

Neither Mahoney could be reached for comment. School Board President Michael Sclafani indicated that the board would reply to questions asked. A response has not been sent.

Mahoney's exit is not the only high-profile event this year in Mahopac. Several incidents were covered by an array of local and regional media outlets, including the departure of basketball Coach Kevin Downes following a scandal involving offensive Tweets from fans that pertained to a game against Mount Vernon; the May exit of then-President Ray Cote from the school board after he was caught on video calling a woman "chubby wubby"; and the decision by John Kopicki to decline the superintendent's posted after being picked.
