Dear Editor,

I'll admit that I haven't followed every bit of news regarding Sheriff Smith and the legal disputes that he's been embroiled in, but as election day approaches, I think that we all could use some clarity. I'd like to appeal to your publication to answer a few questions that might help voters like myself make an informed decision on November 7th.

Questions that I have regarding Sheriff Donald Smith:

As of today, how much have Sheriff Smith's legal fees cost the taxpayers of Putnam County?

How much can the county be on the hook for as ongoing legal action proceeds?

Is there a limit to how much the county can pay?

Is it true that the Sheriff has a second home in Florida? If so, how much time does he spend in said residence vs. here in Putnam County, NY?

Legally, does the Sheriff have any standing to not enforce the NY SAFE Act which is state law?

With so much going on these days it's hard to stay informed. Honestly, I wouldn't have expected a Sheriff's race to rise above the fold, but it seems we have a unique choice in Putnam County this year. I thank you for your journalistic contributions to our community.

Respectfully,

Ana Silverlinck
