Salvatore Deangelis, 31, of Harriman, remained under police guard -- with bail set at $50,000 on an eluding charge -- pending a court appearance scheduled for Monday.

The chase began just before 2 p.m. when a Paramus police officer tried to pull over Deangelis's 2016 Yamaha R1 motorcycle for speeding in and out of lanes on northbound Route 17, authorities said.

A Hackensack police officer was headed toward the pursuit when his cruiser t-boned a car that authorities said pulled into his path at Ross and Summit avenues.

The driver, 67-year-old John Parham of Ross Avenue, later died at Hackensack University Medical Center, authorities said.

"The officer involved in the accident was admitted [to HUMC] for non-life-threatening injuries he sustained as a result of the collision and [a] second patrolman was admitted for heat exhaustion he suffered while rendering aid to both victims," Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.

Deangelis later was involved in a crash in Maywood that sent him to the hospital. READ MORE....
