Rare Supermoon Visible Over Putnam Skies Sunday

Sky watchers from the area as well as from all of North and South America to western Europe enjoyed a rare astronomical event Sunday night, in which the moon appeared to redden in the sky - a so-called blood moon.

The supermoon, the first in 33 years, occurred when the Earth's satellite reaches the point in its orbit when it is closest to the planet and was coupled with a lunar eclipse, with the moon passing behind the Earth's shadow. Red light is able to pass through the Earth's atmosphere.

The two events won't happen together again for another 18 years.

Prime viewing time for the spectacle was between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday.
