Putnam Valley Grange Holds 'Backyard Farming' Workshop

PUTNAM, N.Y. -- Putnam Valley Grange's Nancy McDaid, a "Backyard Farming" and chicken enthusiast, will host a backyard farming workshop series about raising backyard chickens from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21.

Whether you'd like a big flock or just a few as pets, this workshop will cover all the basics of raising chickens on almost any amount of property. Learn how to start chicks successfully, about different coop designs, predators and deterrents, types of feeds and supplements to keep your chickens healthy, local regulations regarding keeping chickens on residential property and much more.

The program will include the use of numerous photographs, diagrams and charts, examples of the equipment and tools used in caring for chickens and their eggs and perhaps even a few guest chickens.
