PUTNAM, N.Y. – February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and the Putnam Communities That Care (CTC) Coalition and the Putnam/Northern Westchester Women's Resource Center have some tips for parents looking to prevent dating violence and abuse.
More than one in 10 teens who have been on a date have also been abused by their boyfriend or girlfriend.
Parents are urged to keep the lines of communication open and make sure they follow these tips: treat others with respect and be a role model for your children and talk about having healthy relationships early before they start dating.
Parents concerned about their children should contact the National Dating Abuse Helpline at 1-866-331-9474 or text 'loveis' to 22522.
The Putnam/Northern Westchester Women’s Resource Center also has more information at www.pnwwrc.org .
