Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-Cold Spring) said thoughts and prayers were not enough following the death of 58 people in a shooting in Las Vegas Sunday night at a country music festival. More than 500 people were injured.
“We need all the facts, but common sense tells us we can do more as a community to address mental illness, hatred and gun violence, and we must," Maloney said. "I’m also thankful for the bravery and heroism of the first responders and medical workers."
County Executie MaryEllen Odell called the shooting "heinous" and an "unimaginable tragedy."
"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families," Odell said. "I also want to commend the brave first-responders who did their job with courage, protecting others before they took their own safety into consideration.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced flags will be flown at half-staff from Oct. 2 through Oct. 6 in honor of the victims.
"My heart aches for its victims and their loved ones on this darkest of days," Cuomo said. "How many more times must we see the effects of gun violence and feel the devastating effects of these shootings before we act as a country and as a people?"
Cuomo said security measures will be added at key points around the state as a precaution.
"The safety of New Yorkers and our visitors is our number one priority, and we are remaining vigilant and in close contact with local and federal officials and our partner law enforcement agencies," Cuomo said.
President Donald Trump said he was filled with sadness, shock, and grief and thanked first responders for saving lives.
"Hundreds of our fellow citizens are now mourning the sudden loss of a loved one -- a parent, a child, a brother or sister," Trump said. "We cannot fathom their pain. We cannot imagine their loss. To the families of the victims: We are praying for you and we are here for you, and we ask God to help see you through this very dark period."
