An investigation revealed that a 2003 Chevrolet Impala operated by Peter Mosen, 64 years old, of Walden, New York, was traveling westbound on Interstate 84.

A second westbound vehicle, operated by 28-year-old Jason Vargas of Chicopee, Massachusetts, was traveling at a high rate of speed, police said.

Vargas lost control of his vehicle and struck an earth embankment in the median of the highway. Vargas’ vehicle subsequently re-entered the interstate and struck Mosen’s vehicle, according to police.

Vargas and a 9-year-old passenger were transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital by Mobil Life Support with minor injuries.

Mosen was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with a severe leg injury. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time, police said.
