Hero Service Dog Figo Gets Widespread Publicity After Rescue In Brewster

BREWSTER, N.Y. -- Figo the guide dog, who attempted to protect a woman from an oncoming vehicle in Brewster, has garnered significant media attention this week.

Several regional and national news outlets have noticed the dog's action, including the Associated Press, USA Today (by republishing a story from The Journal News, which is a sister paper due to common ownership from Gannett), CNNBuzzfeed, NBC and CBS.

According to police, the incident happened on Monday, June 8 at around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of North Main Street and Michael Neuner Drive. There, police said Audrey Stone was struck and injured by a Brewster school district vehicle.

Figo, who police added is Stone's service dog, tried to protect her by jumping in front, which resulted in him being struck by the vehicle.

Stone was taken to Danbury Hospital for treatment while Figo was taken to Middlebranch Veterinary, which is located in Carmel. Police said that Stone had multiple injuries, one of which is a fractured ankle. Police added that Figo had surgery for a fractured right leg and lacerations, and that he will need to a wear a splint for four to six weeks.
