MAHOPAC, N.Y. -- A male golden retriever was found wandering around Watermelon Hill Road in Mahopac recently, according to the Putnam Humane Society.

The organization is actively looking for the pooch’s family, but if no one comes forward within a certain time frame, he will be assessed by a vet and put up for adoption.

The dog appears to be in good health and was clean, meaning that he probably hadn't been outside for a long period of time before he was found, a shelter official said Sunday.

They are not sure how old he is, she added.

The shelter is located at 68 Old Route 6, Carmel.
