Jane Soodalter's photography is part of the Front Street Gallery's exhibit of red art work through March 29. Soodalter's photograph is a close-up photo of the American flag called "Government Shutdown."
Soodalter said she likes to take photos at construction sites, taking photos of machinery, tools and Dumpsters.
"I get really close, like an inch away," Soodalter said. "I like taking tiny parts of very big things."
When Soodalter took the photo, the government was in the midst of its 15-day shutdown in 2013.
"It was the erosion of everything I believed this country stood for," Soodalter said. "It was my little political statement."
Soodalter said she has been a photographer her whole life, but started doing it more seriously after she retired from her job as an occupational therapist.
"I've been shooting all my life," Soodalter said. "My father was a professional photographer so I've been in front and behind the camera my whole life. I've always thought of documenting the world, ever since I can remember."
Putnam County is a photographers dream, Soodalter said.
"It's so beautiful up here," said Soodalter, who used to live in Chappaqua. "There's the river, the hills. There's so many places where you step outside and it's a great subject for photos. It's very inspiring."
She said she loves using digital cameras and the experiments and risks it allows.
"I was a computer nut to begin with," Soodalter said.
Besides being featured at the Front Street Gallery, Soodalter's work is also on display at Galley 66 at 66 Main St. in Cold Spring.
"I'm so happy to be in the Patterson show," Soodalter said. "It's a lovely little gallery. It offers me exposure to that part of Putnam and into Connecticut. I am glad to be a part of it."
