The event emphasizes meals that feature locally grown vegetables, manageable portion sizes, and limited oils and sodium. 35 restaurants took part in last year's event.

“In Putnam, so many of our restaurants showcase that delicious and healthy can go hand-in- hand,” says County Executive MaryEllen Odell. “It is especially helpful that so many chefs use a farm-to-table approach that promotes using locally grown ingredients.

County Health Commissioner Allen Beals, MD, explains how 'eat-smart' works. “The eat- smart idea is based on the belief that customers should not skimp on tastiness, but should also not shortchange themselves on their health.”

Each participating restaurant was required to submit their recipes to nutritionists, tweaking them along the way.

“Most restaurants easily grasped the concept,” explained nutritionist Kristine Boyle, who headed the evaluation process. “There really were few major adjustments that needed to be made. ”

Restaurants interested in participating can contact Boyle or event coordinator Shawn Rogan by calling the Department of Health at 1-845-808-1390.

The establishments selected can be seen via the department's home page at www.putnamcountyny.com/lhp/esrw starting next month.
