US Presidential Scholar: HS Senior From Northern Westchester Gets Top Honor
A high school senior from Northern Westchester has received one of the nation's highest honors for students. Byram Hills High School senior Samantha Milewicz of Armonk is one of only 161 students nationwide to be selected as a US Presidential Scholar, school district officials announced on Friday, May 12. The US Presidential Scholars Program was created in 1964 and recognizes a few of the country's most distinguished graduating seniors. A former volunteer firefighter in Westchester County who eventually became a captain of his department has died. Mamaroneck resident Eugene Doherty died on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the age of 47, according to his obituary. Born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland in 1975 before later moving to Westchester County, Doherty had a passion for being involved in his community and served as a volunteer fireman for the Village of Mamaroneck Engine 40, “Mamaro," his obituary said. A Hudson Valley resident and member of the New York Army National Guard has died unexpectedly at the age of 26. Dutchess County resident William Christopher Bean IV, of Hyde Park, died in Albany on Monday, April 18, according to his obituary. Bean was born in Poughkeepsie, and he graduated in the class of 2015 from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park. A volunteer firefighter from the area has died unexpectedly while at work. Sullivan County resident Aaron Michael Terpstra, age 22, of Kenoza Lake died on Wednesday, Feb. 23 while at work as a foreman for NG Gilbert, said his obituary. An Orange County native, Terpstra was born in 1999 in Middletown to Kim and Jim Terpstra Jr. and graduated from Sullivan West Central School in 2017.
