It took a world record-breaking effort to keep a former Hudson Valley high school track standout from the top of the podium at the Tokyo Olympics in a race for the ages. Both Norway’s Karsten Warholm and the United States’ Rai Benjamin, a Mount Vernon High School star athlete in Westchester, broke the previous world record in the 400-meter hurdle, though the Hudson Valley native found himself coming up just short against his nemesis. A former high school swimming standout in the Hudson Valley can add a new accomplishment to her resume after earning a medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Early on Wednesday, July 28 in Tokyo, the 19-year-old Kate Douglass, a Westchester native who starred for Pelham High School, won the bronze medal in the 200-meter individual medley, behind Japan’s You Ohashi and her teammate at the University of Virginia, Alex Walsh. A diving duo from Long Island and Massachusetts who met at the University of Indiana dove their way into the record books, joining the parade of Americans claiming medals at the Tokyo Olympics. Nassau County native Andrew Capobianco, who calls Mineola home, and his teammate, Hampshire County resident Michael Hixon, out of Amherst, Massachusetts, took home the silver medal for the US in the men’s synchronized 3-meter springboard event. A swimming standout from Fairfield County smoked the competition at Olympic Qualifiers and will represent the red, white, and blue this summer in Tokyo. Former Ridgefield High School standout Kieran Smith, a junior competing for the University of Florida, stood atop the podium in the 400-meter freestyle at the US Olympic trials held in Omaha, Nebraska over the weekend after outpacing his competition in a race he never fell behind.
