New York State Attorney General Letitia James has expressed “multiple, grave concerns” about the decommissioning of Indian Point Energy Center in Westchester. On Thursday, Jan. 23, it was announced that the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission accepted an application from the owner of Indian Point to transfer the power plant to Holtec International for decommissioning. Both Indian Point Reactors Down For First Time In 10 Years
Both reactors at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Westchester were temporarily offline for the first time in years. An initial shutdown of one reactor began at approximately 3 p.m. on Friday, March 15, which lasted through the early hours of Sunday, March 24, according to Entergy. Indian Point Operating Licenses Extended By NRC
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved license extensions for the Indian Point nuclear power plants in Buchanan. Entergy's renewed licenses are intended to cover the nuclear reactors' operation beyond the state-negotiated closing dates. The initial Indian Point license renewal application, submitted to the NRC in 2007, sought 20-year extensions for Units 2 and 3. NRC Staff Holds Public Hearing On Indian Point Nuclear Power Performance
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2017 safety performance of Indian Point nuclear power plants, operated by Entergy, during a public meeting on June 21 in Tarrytown. The meeting, to be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, at 455 South Broadway, begins at 7 p.m. NRC staff responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site, will be available to discuss the Buchanan power plants' performance. Indian Point Workers Authorize Strike
Employees of Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan could be going on strike as early as next week. More than 300 members of Local 1-2, the Utility Workers of America, which represents employees of the nuclear power plant in Northern Westchester, voted to authorize a strike on Thursday. Their contract expires on Wednesday and a strike could happen as early as next week. Employees said they are seeking a new collective bargaining agreement that would extend to the plant's closing.
