Aggressive, Human-Biting Lone Star Tick Becoming More Common In NY, CT
A human-biting tick linked to a variety of diseases is rapidly expanding its reach in the Northeast.
The amblyomma americanum tick, known as the lone star tick, is usually found in southern states, especially the Southwest,.
The name comes from the white dot on the female's back, and is not named after Texas, where they are common. (See image above.)
It's one of four types of ticks found in the region that can transmit disease to humans along with deer, dog and woodchuck ticks. The lone star tick is similar in size to the deer tick, at about one-eighth of an inch long.

With temperatures warming up, federal officials are warning area residents to be alert during Lyme Disease Awareness Month in May and through the summer.
Illnesses from mosquito, tick, and flea bites have tripled nationally in the past decade, with more than 640,000 cases reported during the 13 years from 2004 through 2016, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since then, nine new germs spread by mosquitoes and ticks were discovered or introduced into the country.
