Pound Ridge Lions Club to Present Student Awards

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – The Pound Ridge Lions Club will present four Student Community Service Awards during a reception on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Pound Ridge Town House.

Lions Club President Ed Condon announced that the awards will be presented to four outstanding Fox Lane Hill School graduating seniors who exemplify the Lions motto, “We Serve.”

The awards are named in memory of Lions Club members whose lives personified the meaning of public service in Pound Ridge and the surrounding area.

The Santo Pulise Memorial Award will be presented to Adam D'Agostino.

D’Agostino has been a volunteer for the Pound Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, where he has been a leader and a valuable contributor. He joined the department's Junior Corps program, attended meetings, and participated in regular drills, training and other department activities and fundraising, attended calls, and completed course work required to become a certified New York firefighter.  He also acted as recruiting liaison for line officers and organized the Junior Corps 911 sign-replacement project. He was also an officer of Fox Lane's First Responder's Club, which promotes awareness about community service and volunteering.

The Nathan Glassman Memorial Award will be presented to Vincent Zafonte.

Zafonte has also volunteered extensively with the Pound Ridge Volunteer Fire Department throughout high school. Initially joining the Junior Corps program, he also attended regular meetings, department activities, fundraising and training, attended calls, and became certified as a New York firefighter. He completed a significant number of firefighting courses, above and beyond the course work required by the department and the state. He was also a volunteer for the Pound Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Corps, assisting with equipment, driving, and attending calls.

The Julius Goodman Memorial Award will be presented to Kurt Wasserman.

Wasserman has been a reliable volunteer at Hiram Halle Library for three years. He took part in peer tutoring at Fox Lane, linking struggling students with student scholars. He traveled twice to Nicaragua with Bridges to Community, rising with the sun to spend the days in cement and mortar construction. Helping to build homes for people in need, he revitalized Fox Lane's Habitat for Humanity Club, which he also served as an officer. He organized trips with Habitat for Humanity to help build homes for people in Arizona and for those still displaced by Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi. Wasserman also found time to organize five local building trips to Habitat to Humanity sites.

The Henry L. Wollenweber Memorial Award will be presented to Allison Lombardi.

Lombardi became a role model for young girls by volunteering throughout high school with the Saturday morning Fox Lane Girls Youth Basketball Clinic, serving young girls in the Bedford Central School District. Initially a clinic participant, she later ran basketball stations, trained girls in skills, officiated at games, and organized student volunteers to keep the clinic running smoothly. She also used her passion for basketball to serve others by volunteering as an assistant coach for the CYO Girls' Basketball League, assisting at practices and games throughout basketball season. In addition, Lombardi organized a group of classmates each year to work on an assembly line to help pack dry goods for Feed my Starving Children, an organization that sends hand-packed meals for malnourished children to countries around the world. She also tutored students in academic subjects each week.

The awards ceremony is open to the public.

Condon said the Pound Ridge Lions Club offers its thanks to the community for its continuing support of the awards and the Lions' other projects such as Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Vacation Camp for the Blind, the Pound Ridge Ambulance Corps, and Lions Nursing Scholarships. Next year, the club will celebrate its 50th year. Those wishing to make a tax-deductible donation can send their checks to "Pound Ridge Lions Club Charities, Inc." at P.O.
