POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – Pound Ridge Elementary School is telling its students, “Welcome to the club!”

Starting next week, the school is offering a plethora of new clubs that students can join either for the sheer fun of it, or to help stretch their academic muscles.

According to PTA President Gail Mazlish, the school is introducing a math club, a chess club and language clubs that include French and Spanish; Chinese may be added at a later date.

“There is a huge interest in the language clubs,” Mazlish said. “They are the ones that seem to be in demand and have really taken off.”

Both the French and Spanish clubs will be split into two based on grade; one for grades 1-2 and another for grades 2-3.

Mazlish said the math club is designed to help kids have fun with a subject that they often dread. The chess club will offer an opportunity for students to learn the game and enter competitions if they want, though it’s not required.

The clubs will generally meet during the morning, although some may have afternoon start times if there are scheduling conflicts.

Mazlish said the reaction to the formation of the clubs has been outstanding.

“More than 10 percent of the student body has signed up,” she said.
