BEDFORD, N.Y. Forty-two students have been inducted into the Fox Lane High School Chapter of the National Art Honor Society
These students have not only demonstrated a commitment to their own artistic growth, they have also brought art into the entire school and community, said Paul Tooker, K-12 Coordinator for Performing Arts for the Bedford Central School District.
The highlight of the induction ceremony was a speech by recent graduate Emily Hoffman, who now attends the Rhode Island School of Design.
Her words validated the pursuit of art as an avenue to successful careers and a fulfilling life, Tooker said.
During the past school year, the inductees created Art History Day to help educate Fox Lane students learn more about American artists throughout history. In addition, all of the students performed several hours of community service geared toward educating others about art
Additionally, senior Dan Dittrich won first place at the Bruce Museum's "iCreate" exhibit. Works by Dittrich, along with fellow Fox Lane seniors Carly Boyajian and Jessica Blanchard, were accepted by the museum in Greenwich, Conn. for the juried exhibit of high school senior work across two counties. Nearly 300 works were submitted to the museum but only 35 were accepted for the exhibit.
In fact, when the museum came to pick up the work that had made it to the final round of jurying, they literally took Jessica's piece off the wall and said they had to have it for the show, Tooker said. This piece is very special to the artist because it is a lifelike sculpted clay portrait of Fox Lane High school coach and security guard John McLaughlin III who passed away last September. Jessica spent months perfecting his likeness and finishing it with a bronze patina.
