White Plains Police Chief James M. Bradley was among the law enforcement officials welcoming the federal money, saying, “In this day and age, they are still the number one way to protect your officers from serious bodily harm. We are very happy to have them.”
White Plains police officers will be equipped with 50 new bulletproof vests with the federal funding.
“We must ensure local law enforcement have the resources necessary to protect themselves and our communities,'' Lowey said in a statement.
Statewide, a total of 180 police agencies are receiving $877,586 to purchase 2,336 bulletproof vests.
“This federal funding will enhance police officers’ safety when patrolling our neighborhoods,'' Lowey added. "I will continue working to ensure law enforcement personnel have the safety equipment they need.”
Police departments receiving federal grants in Westchester are:
·-- Croton-on-Hudson: $2,893 for six vests
-- Dobbs Ferry: $4,750 for 11 vests
-- Greenburgh: $3,698 for 12 vests
-- Harrison: $1,113 for three vests
-- Mount Pleasant: $1,852. for five vests
-- New Castle: $5,346 for 15 vests
-- Port Chester: $3,382 for 10 vests
-- Rye Brook: $796 for two vests
·-- Tarrytown: $5,307 for 15 vests
-- White Plains: $18,747 for 50 vests
-- Yorktown: $5,858 for 15 vests
Three Rockland County police departments that got federal money for bulletproof vests are: Clarkstown, $16,091 for 33 vests; Spring Valley, $8,861 for 22 vests; and Piermont, $694 for two vests.
