POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- The body of a man who was doing irrigation-pump work for a Pound Ridge resident was recovered Thursday afternoon from a nearby lake, according to New York State Police.
Although the man's official cause of death will be determined pending an autopsy, New York State Police Investigator Joseph Becerra said that the matter is being investigated as an accidental drowning.
The body was located in Blue Heron Lake, which is next to South Bedford Road.
The man, whom state police are not identifying at this time, was working in a canoe on the lake when it tipped over, Becerra said.
While he was in the water, the man tried to grab a hold of the canoe but in doing so he ended up pushing it farther out into the lake, Becerra added.
A fellow worker who saw the man go under got a resident of the property to call 911, Becerra said, with the dispatch coming in at approximately 2 p.m. on Thursday.
Responding to the scene were the Pound Ridge Fire Department, Pound Ridge Police Department, Westchester EMS, State Police and the Stamford Fire Department.
Becerra did not have information about the man's age or residence.
Stamford Firefighter Joe Maida told reporters on the scene about his fire department's diving team playing a role in the recovery of the body.
Maida said that the body was found about 12 feet deep in the lake and was retrieved in about five minutes from the time that the diving team first accessed the lake.
Maida did not know the man's age but estimated that he looked to be about 20 to 30 years old.
