Hurricane Sandy blew into Pound Ridge on Oct. 29 and hit the community hard, knocking down trees and utility lines and leaving nearly the entire town without power for than a week.
“Multiple trees, electric poles and wires are down on all main and secondary roads,” Supervisor Gary Warshauer said at the time. “We ask residents to be patient and stay off the roads as our police, highway, maintenance and fire departments work together with NYSEG to clear the wires, remove trees and make the roads safe.”
Warshauer predicted that “restoration will be a long process.”
He was right. Nearly three days after the storm hit, many of the town roads remained impassable and the town was without much of its cellphone and Internet service, which created a communication problem for town officials and emergency responders.
Pound Ridge businesses in Scotts Corners were hit particularly hard. Shop owners with inventories of perishable items say they lost thousands of dollars.
Billy Fortin, owner of Scotts Corner Market, estimated his losses at about $75,000.
The storm and subsequent blackout was devastating to her business, said Toni Cummaro, who owns Pound Ridge Deli.
“We lost everything – thousands of dollars’ worth of stuff,” she said.
