Pound Ridge Police Investigate Computer Scam

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – Pound Ridge police are warning residents to beware of a possible computer scam in which a caller claiming to be a Microsoft employee requests to have remote access to their computer in order to fix a problem.

Police said they received a complaint on Monday from a Pine Drive resident who said she received a call from a male with a heavy Indian accent who said he was affiliated with Microsoft and was seeking to help her with her computer problems. Police said that the woman told the caller, who identified himself as “Tom Skerit,” that she never contacted Microsoft and had no computer problems. The caller continued, making several requests to obtain “control” of her laptop via the Internet and use a search program to scan for problems, police said.

The woman told officers that at this time she realized it was probably a scam. She did not give out any personal information and was able to obtain the caller’s phone number, police said. She did a reverse check of the number and found it belonged to a company called Global Connect Cloud located in India, police said. She called the company and spoke to a different male who told her the company had no affiliation with Microsoft, police said. She told him not to contact her anymore.

The following items were also reported by the Lewisboro police:

Marijuana possession: On Tuesday, April 24, police discovered a small amount of marijuana on several youths on High Ridge Road. No charges were filed, but the youths were turned over to their parents.

Unlicensed contractor: On Wednesday, April 25, police issued a summons to an unlicensed contractor working on a driveway on Laurel Road. Police were notified of the problem by the Westchester County Department of Consumer Protection.

Suspended license arrest: Police stopped a vehicle for going 44 mph in a 30 mph zone on Westchester Avenue last Friday and a subsequent DMV check revealed that the driver’s New York driving privileges were suspended. Police arrested Robert Bazata, 44, of New Canaan, Conn., and charged him with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor.
