Pound Ridge Officials Offer Tips For Hurricane Sandy

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – The Pound Ridge Office of Emergency Management and town officials are getting the town ready to face whatever Hurricane Sandy has in store and have some advice for residents to prepare for the worst.

“Everyone who would participate [in emergency response] has been put on notice, and our equipment is prepped and ready for anything coming our way,” Town Supervisor Gary Warshauer said. “Historically these storms result in localized flooding and power outages. We are prepared for the possibility of that. Hopefully, we won’t experience what we did last year.”

If there are widespread power outages, the town will open Town House as a warming and dry-off center, Warshauer said.

“NYSEG has generously provided bottled water and dry ice during past storms, and we would arrange to disperse that from the Town House,” he said. “Timings and availability will be posted on our website. We are using Twitter as well. If they can’t get online, people can call the Pound Ridge Police Department at 914-764-4206 for nonemergency information. For emergencies, of course, they should dial 911.”

Emergency officials said putting together an emergency kit before the storm arrives is a good idea. The kit should contain:

  • Drinking water and nonperishable food items
  • First aid supplies and medications
  • Some hand tools such as a wrench, pliers, and screwdriver 
  • Batteries
  • Alcohol-based sanitizer
  • First aid supplies and three-day supply of vital medications
  • Sterile adhesive bandages in assorted sizes
  • Antiseptic
  • Petroleum jelly or other lubricant
  • Assorted sizes of safety pins
  • Tweezers
  • Needle
  • Aspirin or non-aspirin pain reliever
  • Anti-diarrhea medication
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Battery-operated radio, extra batteries
  • Flashlight, extra batteries
  • Duct tape
  • Candles
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • Unscented household chlorine bleach
  • Feminine supplies
  • Personal hygiene items

Residents with special needs such as electricity dependent medical apparatus should make extra plans and have precautionary measures in place, officials said. If they do not, it is recommended they contact the town, fire department, police department and/or local hospital for help.

For power issues or downed power lines, call NYSEG at 800-572-1131, Residents who depend on electrical medical equipment can notify NYSEG now at 800-572-1111.

NYSEG also cautions people to not go near downed power lines.
