Pound Ridge Library Gets an Interior Makeover

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – As soon as you walk into the Pound Ridge Library you know something is different. There’s more space and things look a little brighter, a little newer.

The library underwent an interior makeover this past week, which included installation of a new circulation desk, a new information desk, along with new book shelving, tables and chairs.

“The new circulation desk – that was major,” said Library Director Marilyn Tinter. “The old one was there since the 1970s and was pretty shabby and beat up.”

Tinter said she and her staff picked out the circulation desk and helped to custom design it.

“We decided where the drawers would be and how the computers would be set up and arranged,” she said. “It makes everything so much easier.”

The makeover, which will cost approximately $50,000, has been in the works for more than a year, but Tinter said it was much needed.

“The information desk is the first thing patrons see when they come in,” she said. “The other one was an old throwaway from the Port Chester Library. Now when people come in, they’re greeted with this.”

Tinter pointed out that rich, dark mahogany wood matches from piece to piece to give the library interior a more uniformed look. Part of the renovation included moving the shelves that contain the new books out of their current location and replaced with a table and chairs where some of the computers have been relocated. The new books are being moved one row back, and the books displaced by that move will be relocated to the new shelves, which run the length of the library.

The renovation was completed within 24 hours, which Tinter found amazing.

“It was like a symphony with all these parts working together,” she said. “People don’t realize what it took. On Wednesday night we had people from the town highway department and rec department to move out the old shelves, as well as a Westchester County Library System tech person to dismantle the computers. After that, we had to reinstall and reconnect everything. We also had an electrician here because the power was off. Everyone just worked together.

Tinter said the goal of the project was not just aesthetic improvements, but also to make the library more functional and efficient.
