The oil tank replacement project at the Hiram Halle Memorial Library should be complete within a week, leaving just walkway replacement and landscaping to do before the main entrance can re-open.
The project was slowed after its April start by the discovery that one of the two tanks had an extensive leak, which meant that the contaminated soil had to be trucked away and replaced with clean fill.The final cost of the remediation isn't yet known, Pound Ridge library director Marilyn M. Tinter said Thursday. The original budget for the project was approximately $10,000, and the initial price quoted for the clean-up was $16,000 on top of that, she said. Once the remediation started, though, the leak was found to be much worse than expected, resulting in a higher final tab."We didn't plan for it, so we don't know how we'll handle it now," Tinter said.The leaking tank was the newer of the two being replaced, having been installed in 1972. The tank that was intact dated to the 1950s when the library opened.
