Pound Ridge Business Assoc. Looks to Stimulate January Sales

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – If the holiday season didn’t completely diminish your desire to shop, you’re in luck. The Pound Ridge Business Association is sponsoring its 19th Annual January Sales Days from now until Jan. 31.

“If it didn’t sell during the holiday season this is an opportunity [for merchants] to sell it now,” said Joan Silbersher, a member of the Pound Ridge Business Association who is heading up the event. She is also proprietor of Antiques & Tools of Business & Kitchen. “Shoppers can get 10 to 50 percent off from selected items storewide."

Seven members of the Business Association are taking part: Albano Appliance, Antiques & Interiors, Antiques & Tools of Business & Kitchen, Asia Hamachi, Juleigh’s Resale Couture, Pound Ridge Wine and Spirits and Pound Ridge Nurseries. All stores except the nursery are located in the Scotts Corner business district

Silbersher said the Business Association doesn’t run a pre-Christmas sale, figuring that consumers are already motivated and don’t need incentives to shop. But after Christmas, especially in January, is a particularly slow time for retailers and restaurateurs, which the Business Association feels is the perfect time for a promotion.

January Sales Days actually kicked off on Monday – the day after Christmas – and Silbersher said shoppers have responded.

“We sold a lot of stuff yesterday (Monday),” she said. “We had a lot of first-timers coming out, but we also saw a lot of returnees who were out looking for discounts. It all went really well.”

In the middle of January Sales Days, Silbersher will present New Years In Scotts Corners, which is sponsored by her store, Antiques & Tools of Business & Kitchen.

On New Year’s Day, Silbersher will have a barbecue set up in front of the store where she and her staff will roast chestnuts and toast marshmallows, which they’ll hand out for free to both kids and adults alike.

“The parents seem to love toasting the marshmallows even more than the kids,” she said. “They always tell me, ‘I haven’t done this since I was a kid.’”

In addition to the marshmallows and chestnuts, Silbersher will continue her weekly antique and farmer's market sale. There will be antique dealers, farmers and bakers set up outside her store from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. selling their wares.

“It’s our final one for the season,” Silbersher said. “We will start them back up again in April.”

Additionally, there will be several other stores open in Scotts Corners on New Year’s Day along with Silbersher’s, including Asia Hamachi, Juleigh’s Resale Couture and Pound Ridge Wine & Spirits.

“We do it because it helps bring people into the business area,” she said.
