With a heat wave settling into Westchester that could bring record-breaking temperatures, officials at the Pound Ridge Elementary School are taking some safety measures to help keep students cool and safe.
We are trying to keep it business as usual, but we will be taking some precautions, school Principal Peter Politi said.
The extreme heat is stretching from Baltimore to Boston with temperatures ranging from 95 to 99 degrees in some places. A heat advisory has been put in place for the entire tri-state area. To qualify for a heat advisory, the heat and humidity must make it feel like at least 95 degrees for two consecutive days.
Politi said the school sent home notices with the students on Tuesday letting parents know what the school would do to keep kids cool. He said the school will utilize parts of the building that do have air conditioning as cooling-off area, such as the tech lab, conference room, and a basement room in order to help students avoid overheating.
We will also adjust our recesses and make sure that the kids are drinking plenty of fluids, the principal said.
Politi added that the school nurse will keep the teachers informed of any students she believes may be more susceptible to extreme heat so that the staff can keep an eye on them.
We will be very vigilant, he said.
The heat advisory will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening and will be put back in place on Thursday from noon to 8 p.m.
The National Weather Service said some relief can be expected by Friday as a cold front moves in bringing with it some showers and temperatures in the low 80s. Temperatures in the low 70s are expected by the weekend.
