POUND RIDGE, N.Y. The Pound Ridge police arrested one driver and issued an array of summonses and citations during a commercial-vehicle checkpoint this past week.
It was the second of three checkpoint details the department plans to hold this spring in conjunction with the State Police, the Westchester County Department of Consumer Protection and the county Solid Waste Commission.
The results of the checkpoint include the following:
- One individual arrested and held on warrants that were issued out of five county jurisdictions for a variety of criminal charges
- Thirty-four summonses for a variety of safety violations
- One company cited for operating without workers compensation insurance
- Six drivers charged with driving without a license
- Two drivers charged with driving commercial vehicles with a suspended New York license
- One company charged with operating without a solid-waste permit
Conducted annually since 2005, the checkpoints are done to ensure that commercial vehicles operating in Pound Ridge are in compliance with all statutes and regulations. As part of the operation, state troopers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit work with Pound Ridge police to conduct the inspections to ensure the trucks are safe. Police also confirm that the drivers have the proper credentials to carry the materials theyre transporting and have the licenses necessary to operate the trucks.
The Westchester County Department of Consumer Affairs ensures that all commercial business operating in Pound Ridge are properly permitted and that employees are carrying the correct insurance to protect homeowners.
The work that these troopers perform is critical to making our highways safe, especially these narrow and windy roads in towns like Pound Ridge, said Pound Ridge Police Chief David Ryan. To have these kinds of major safety violations in fuel trucks or find drivers operating trucks with loads that are thousands and thousands of pounds over the capacity of the vehicle and getting them off the road is critical to preventing serious accidents.
Ryan also praised the work of county Department of Consumer Protection and the Solid Waste Commission.
Finding these companies operating without permits and conducting illegal business in Pound Ridge is crucial to protecting homeowners from being victimized or, worse, finding themselves getting work done by unlicensed companies and then involved in litigation when the work is not done properly or a worker gets injured, he said. I cant thank the Department of Consumer Protection enough for its willingness to participate in these details.
Pound Ridge police have a third such checkpoint scheduled for later this spring.
