POUND RIDGE, N.Y. Due to a number of complaints from town residents about unwanted door-to-door solicitors, the Pound Ridge Town Board is considering enacting a law that would limit the practice.
At a town board work session this week, Supervisor Gary Warshauer said that town officials have received numerous complaints of peddlers going door to door trying to sell products to homeowners, which have prompted calls to local police.
Most recently, weve had folks from Verizon selling Fios services, Warshauer said. And thats something that customers cant even get in Pound Ridge.
While the law is just in the discussion stage, Warshauer said it would require businesses to obtain a permit and put company markings on their vehicles.
However, we cant restrict not-for-profit groups from going door to door, Warshauer noted.
Warshauer said that residents would be able to be placed on a list that would prohibit solicitors from knocking on their doors.
You can opt out, just like you can for (telemarketing) calls and junk mail. It would be like that, Warshauer said.
Warshauer said the town of Rye has adopted such a peddler and soliciting law.
The topic will be discussed further at the boards next regular meeting on April 5.
