Mitch Freedman, the library's interim director, announced Thursday that the detected lead level is 86 parts per billion. In contrast, the Environmental Protection Administration's allowable maximum is just 15 parts per billion.
Freedman added that no one should drink the library's water or use it in the preparation of food.
The library is responding by making bottled water immediately available. Additionally, a Poland Spring water dispenser will be installed at the library on Friday, May 13, Freedman added.
High lead levels, most notably in the water supply in Flint, MI, have made headlines over the past year, as concern about the developmental impact on children has grown. Information on testing children for lead and preventing exposure is on the CDC's website.
