Since we were little kids, when this time of year rolls around, many of us make a point of watching classic Christmas programs such as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” or “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

Now that we're adults, these programs still resonate with us, and many of us can quote the dialogue right along with the characters as we watch.

Of course, there are Christmas movies, too – the ones we welcome back year after year like a wayward relative returning home for the holidays. There are the iconic black and white films such as “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” “Holiday Inn” and “A Christmas Carol.” And there’s modern movies as well, some quickly making a case for “classic” status, like “A Christmas Story,” “Elf” and “The Polar Express.”

Watching these shows together has become a tradition for some families, almost as important as trimming the tree and hanging stockings by the chimney with care.

The Pound Ridge Daily Voice sat down with some town officials and employees and asked them what their favorite shows were and if viewing them has become a tradition for their families.

Town Clerk Joanne Pace said she’s a fan of the black and white classics.

“I like ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and ‘Miracle on 34th Street,' ” she said. “I never get tired of watching those.”

But the rest of her family is somewhat divided over which films to watch.

“My kids like ‘The Polar Express.’ They watch that every year,” she said. “But my husband is not a big fan of any of them. I pretty much watch them by myself.”

Pound Ridge Library Director Marilyn Tinter agrees with Pace about some of the shows on her list.

“My all-time favorite is ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’ It’s a family favorite.” she said. “But ‘Elf’ is fun, too. And I also like Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol.’ ”

Pound Ridge Police Department administrator Caroline Meyer said her family also likes the Will Ferrell farce “Elf.”

“I love to watch ‘Elf’ with my daughter,” Meyer said. “She’s fun to watch it with. She cracks me up. But growing up, my favorite was ‘Frosty the Snowman.’ I still watch it when it comes on.”

We are talking a poll of Pound Ridge’s favorite holiday shows or movies. Take a minute to fill it out. Then have yourself a Holly Jolly Christmas!
